Cutting a stem...the right way!
Did you know there is a correct and incorrect way to cut your flowers stems?!?! Well, there is a correct way and we are going to share with you how to correctly cut your stems and why!
As you can see in the photo above all of our stems are cut on an angle, that wasn't done by mistake! To allow water (and not air) to properly flow into the base of a stem it is suggested that you cut on an angle. If a stem is cut flat across the bottom it can sit at the bottom of a vase and it will not allow the water to flow into the stem. YIKES! Every flower needs water! ;)
It is also important to ensure that all of your cutting tools are properly cleaned prior to cutting stems. Dirty tools can carry bacteria that can transfer into your water and onto your flowers. This will kill flowers much faster and we want to enjoy them for as long as possible!
When using a pair of scissors or a knife, make sure your blade is sharp. Dull cutting tools can damage the stem and cause it not to intake water as easily as it should be able too. Crushing the stem will not allow water into the base of the flower.
Now that you know how to properly cut stems run out and buy that beautiful bunch of flowers you have needed for your dinning room table. See your local florist for the freshest flowers on the market!
